How To Repair Oil Lamp

  • #1

Hey all,
With the vast knowledge base, and skilled people here, I'g hoping a solution tin can exist establish in regards to sealing upwardly a pocket-size hurricane oil lamp.
Don't know the manufacturer of my tiny oil lamp. It stands all of viii perchance nine inches tall, holds about iii oz of lamp oil, whatsoever more the oil will leak out where the vertical supports adhere to the tank. I really like this lilliputian lantern and desire to somehow seal up all the leaks.
My first thought is to utilize epoxy ( I accept Devcon five min epoxi) only not sure the epoxy will adhere to the prices that leak.
Then, I idea about using JB weld to seal up the joints, merely over again , unsure I could remove all the residual lamp oil enough to allow the JB Weld to adhere properly.
Though about maybe brazing the peices, but don't want to damage the minor lantern.
I basically take to seal the small tank. Mayhap soldering?
Anyone have any suggestions, recommendation's? Are in that location epoxies specifically designed for this?
I accept pictures, just not on this tablet yet.
The lanterns is a standard hurricane fashion oil lamp, burns a wick, and its well-nigh 9 inches tall.
It's glass globe is most same size as incandescent bulb.
Here are shots of the lantern I need to seal. The areas that need sealing.

Thanks for any input.

FWIW, I take several kero/oil Embury and Dietz barn lanterns I utilise frequently. Sometimes the bottom tank seam volition start weeping/leak, these seams are either soldered or cold pressed rolled depending on manufacturer, the former folk just used a dab of pine pitch to seal, I just make clean area with steel wool or small Dremel wire brush and alcohol and utilise a dab of JB Weld which works fine, and would have no problem using it on a location such equally yours since it'south heat resistant upwards to 500*F.

I was thinking the samething. Knew there was something for gas tanks. Information technology'due south not inexpensive though I remember. Eastwood sells something like this.
Though JB weld should practise fine. Sand information technology downwardly shoot with some paint. Though part of me says but keep for decoration safer

I would have to hold, i believe you should keep this equally a decoration, and get a new oil lantern for use. May I suggest a Dietz lantern if y'all decide to go a new one. I believe the jb weld would work, merely would only be a temporary prepare as yous will virtually probable see a leek farther down the road.

Don't fill up up so much and it won't leak. Sounds uncomplicated but if fuel is coming out the pictured area yous are over filling.

The tubes are for airflow, not gas menstruation. May demand to seal for air but fuel shouldn't come out. Only make full to below tubes on a cold blast manner lantern.

Yeah I take over filled information technology and dumped overage out. Its kinda hard filling from lamp oil bottle. I await a piddling leakage, just oil free flows with extream prejudice if the lamp is not kept level. Time to start using an ounc mensurate I guess to fill it at present. I'one thousand going to use my JB weld to seal the connexion as best I can to tedious the mess of leaking. Lamp is too cute to not use and display simply.
For $6 I'm getting my coin's worth out of it!
Here are shots of the repairs I made yesterday. JB weld, after cleaning up the joints between the tank and the uprights. There were large holes at both top and bottom of the uprights where they attach to the tank. Cleaned up the joints with my dermal and small wire castor. At least now, after filling (Just 3 oz at a time at present) lamp oil won't be spilling out when not setting on flat level ground, or splash out when conveying!
